Engine picks the oil pan

On the Ram 1500, the engine decides the oil pan. Cab, bed and trim do not. Earlier trucks run the 3.9L V6, 5.2L V8 or 5.9L V8, while later trucks use the 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8 or the 5.7L Hemi. Each has its own pan.

Drivetrain can matter for clearance, and some pans cover both 2WD and 4WD. Do not assume a 2008 pan fits a 2009-2010 truck just because the engine matches. Also make sure you are buying an engine oil pan, not a transmission pan. Some listings note that gaskets are not included, such as the steel pan for the 4.7L.

Leaks, dents and stripped plugs

Ram owners replace oil pans because of rust, rock or trail damage, cracks and stripped drain plug threads. You may see oil spots under the truck, a falling oil level or a drain plug that keeps weeping. A dent can also press the pan close to the oil pickup.

Before you buy, clean the area and find the true source. Oil from a valve cover, rear main seal or other upper engine leak can run down and collect on the pan, making the pan look guilty.

Gasket, plug and install notes

Plan on a new gasket or the correct sealant, since many pans ship without one. Fit a new drain plug and washer if the old ones are worn. Clean the block flange so the new seal sits flat.

Access varies. On 4WD trucks, the front axle and driveline can get in the way, and some parts may need to be moved. Support the truck on jack stands, drain the oil fully, and follow the factory steps for your engine. After installing, check that the pickup tube clears the pan, torque bolts evenly, refill and check for leaks.

Ram 1500 questions

Does a Ram 1500 oil pan come with a gasket?

Not always. Several listings, including the steel pan for the 4.7L, note that gaskets are not included. Read the description and order a gasket or the correct sealant if it is not in the box.

Do 2WD and 4WD Ram 1500 trucks use the same oil pan?

Sometimes, but not always. Engine is the main factor, and some pans cover both drivetrains. Check the fitment table for your engine and 2WD or 4WD before ordering.

How do I know if my Ram 1500 oil pan is leaking?

Clean the pan and the engine above it, then drive and check again. Fresh oil only at the pan seam, a crack or the drain plug points to the pan. Oil running down from above means a different leak.
