Engine decides the Ram coil
On a Ram 1500, the engine picks the coil, not the cab, bed, trim or 4WD. Older 3.9L V6, 5.2L and 5.9L V8 trucks use a single coil feeding a distributor and plug wires. The 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8 and 5.7L Hemi use coil-on-plug designs with one coil per cylinder.
That means a single coil for a 4.7L will never fit a 5.9L truck. Body changes in 2002 and 2009 add more splits, so use your VIN for those years. Compare the plug shape, terminal count, boot length and mounting tab with your old coil. Diesel trucks do not use these coils.
Misfire and coil failure signs
A failing coil usually causes a misfire on one cylinder. You will feel a rough idle, a stumble or bucking when you accelerate, lost power or a hard start, and fuel economy may drop. The check engine light comes on, often with a cylinder-specific misfire code.
If the light flashes, the misfire is severe and can damage the catalytic converter, so get it checked soon. A misfire code does not always mean a bad coil. Worn plugs, a damaged connector, injectors or low compression can cause the same code.
Single coil, set and install
On coil-on-plug engines, you can replace just the failed coil or buy a full set like the TRQ coil set. A set suits high mileage trucks with several weak coils. Older distributor engines use a different kind of part, and TRQ also lists a coil and plug wire set for those.
On the 4.7L, each coil is held by one bolt, commonly a 10mm. A simple test is to swap the suspect coil to another cylinder and rescan. If the misfire moves, the coil is bad. Inspect the plug and boot while you are there, and look for oil in the plug tube.

Ram 1500 questions
How many ignition coils does a Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi have?
The 5.7L Hemi uses coil-on-plug ignition, so there is one coil per cylinder position rather than one coil for the engine. Check the listing to see if it is a single coil or a set.
Do I need to replace all ignition coils on my Ram 1500 at once?
No. If one coil has failed, replacing that coil is enough. A full set can make sense on a high mileage truck with more than one weak coil, or when you want to refresh the whole system.
Does a 1999 Ram 1500 use coil packs?
Many 1999-2001 Ram 1500 trucks with the 3.9L V6 or 5.2L and 5.9L V8 use a single coil with a distributor and plug wires. Choose your engine in the fitment table to see the right style.
