Ram 1500 shock fitment

Three Ram bodies fall in this range: the 2001 truck, the 2002-2008 truck and the 2009-2010 truck. A 2001 shock should not be assumed to fit a 2002, and a 2008 shock should not go on a 2009. The front suspension design also changed partway through the 2002-2008 run, so do not treat those years as one group.

Front and rear shocks are different parts. Choose 2WD or 4WD carefully, since catalogs list them apart, even for 2001 Club Cab and Quad Cab trucks. Cab, trim and engine show up as qualifiers too. Check whether the shock uses an upper stud or an eyelet, and whether bushings come in the box.

How worn shocks feel

On a Ram 1500, tired shocks show up as a truck that keeps bouncing after a dip, floats over rough pavement, or dives hard when you brake. A loaded bed may feel loose and wallowy. Cupped tire wear can follow.

Look for oil weeping down the shock body, a bent shaft, a damaged stud or torn bushings. Any of these means replacement. Worn tires, loose steering parts, weak springs and poor alignment cause similar complaints, so inspect the whole front end too.

Buying sets and doing the swap

Shocks are usually sold one at a time, but replace them in axle pairs. The TRQ and Detroit Axle front and rear sets cover all four corners in one order. Rancho and Bilstein rear shocks suit owners who haul or tow.

Ram shock bolts are often rusted, so soak them in penetrating oil the day before. On 2002-2005 front shocks, the upper nut takes an 18mm wrench and the lower bolt a 21mm socket, and a breaker bar helps. Support the truck by the frame on jack stands. Use the torque spec for your year, and replace worn bushings and washers.

Ram 1500 questions

Do 2WD and 4WD Ram 1500 trucks use the same shocks?

No, not in most cases. Catalogs list 2WD and 4WD Ram 1500 shocks separately, especially at the front. Pick your drivetrain in the fitment table before you add a shock to your cart.

How many shocks do I need for my Ram 1500?

Buy at least two for the axle you are servicing, since shocks are replaced in front or rear pairs. If all four are worn, a front and rear set covers the whole truck. Check whether a listing is one shock or a set.

Will a 2008 Ram 1500 shock fit a 2009 Ram 1500?

Do not assume so. The 2009 Ram 1500 is a new body and chassis, with its own shock applications. Choose your exact year in the filter to see parts listed for it.
