Suspension type and wheelbase

Air springs are not shared across every Expedition. Early 4WD trucks can use front air struts, and rear air suspension depends on the package. The 1999-2002 and 2003-2006 trucks use different parts. The 2007-2017 trucks come in standard and EL length, and the 2007-2011 system pairs a separate air bag and shock. The 2018-2021 trucks come in standard and MAX length, with air, coil, load-leveling and adaptive damping setups listed apart.

Match your year, wheelbase, 2WD or 4WD and factory air setup, then the position. Fitment samples here include RWD, 4WD and Platinum 4WD trucks. Compare the air line fitting and mounts with the old part.

Signs of a leaking air spring

Air bags crack and leak with age, and the crimps and air line seals can fail too. You may notice the rear sagging overnight, the truck leaning, bottoming out or sitting unevenly. A hiss, a compressor that runs too long and a suspension warning message are other signs.

On early 4WD trucks, a failed front air strut can make the ride bouncy. The compressor, relay, height sensor, valve block or air lines can cause similar symptoms, so leak-test the spring before you buy one.

Pairs, kits and safe service

Some listings are one spring and some are axle sets from Unity and DIY Solutions. Replacing both sides of an axle together is a common recommendation. SuperSprings helper springs and Arnott conversion kits are a different approach, so do not mix their parts with a factory air system.

On 2007-2011 trucks, turn the air suspension off through the message center before you start. Support the truck safely on jack stands, then deflate through the air line solenoid as the repair procedure describes. Lubricate new O-rings with silicone grease. If the old spring leaked for a while, check the compressor and relay for wear.

Expedition questions

Do all Ford Expeditions have air suspension?

No. Depending on year and package, an Expedition may have rear air, front air struts on early 4WD trucks, coil springs or load-leveling. Check your truck before ordering an air spring.

Should I replace Expedition air springs in pairs?

Replacing both sides of an axle together is a common recommendation, but not required by fitment. Some listings here are single springs and some are sets, so check the quantity.

How do I turn off the air suspension on a 2007-2011 Expedition?

Use the air suspension control in the message center to switch it off before you lift the truck or service any air component. Then support the truck on jack stands.
