Expedition coil fitment by engine
Engine and valve count decide the coil. Drive type, EL or standard body, trim and towing package do not. The 2000-2002 Expedition used the 4.6L or 5.4L V8, and early setups use a coil pack with spark plug wires. The 2005-2006 5.4L 3-valve engine uses individual coil-on-plug units.
The 5.4L 2-valve, listed here as 16-valve, and the 3-valve, listed as 24-valve, take different coils and plugs, so do not buy by 5.4L alone. The 2007-2014 Expedition uses one coil per cylinder, each with one connector and one mounting bolt. Match the connector, boot length and mounting to your old coil.
Signs of a bad Expedition coil
Coils fail from internal breakdown, cracked housings, moisture, carbon tracking and damaged boots. The result is usually a misfire: rough running, hesitation, low power, hard starting and worse fuel economy, with a steady or flashing check engine light and a code for a cylinder or coil circuit.
Look for cracks and carbon tracks on the coil and boot. A coil code is not proof the coil is bad, though. Wiring, connector terminals, the spark plug, the boot and the engine computer can cause the same faults. A P0355 coil circuit code, for example, should start with checks of the wiring and plug.
Replacing coils on the Expedition
Replace the coil for the cylinder you diagnosed, or a full set when you can justify it. Kits such as the Accel direct ignition coil kit cover several cylinders at once, and some kits include boots or plugs. Disconnect the negative battery cable and unplug the connector before you remove a coil.
On coil pack engines, twist the plug wire boots off rather than pulling the wires, and put dielectric grease inside the boots on reassembly. On coil-on-plug engines, blow debris away from the well first. One 2007-2017 video shows a 7 mm bolt at about 53 in-lb, but confirm the spec. Be careful pulling plugs on 2005-2006 3-valve engines, as the factory plugs can break.

Expedition questions
Do the 5.4L 2-valve and 3-valve Expedition engines use the same coils?
No. The 2-valve, listed as 16-valve, and the 3-valve, listed as 24-valve, use different coils and spark plugs. Check your engine in the fitment table.
How many ignition coils does a 2007-2014 Expedition have?
The 5.4L V8 in these years uses one coil per cylinder, so eight coils. Replace the failed coil or buy a set, depending on your diagnosis.
Can a bad spark plug cause an Expedition coil code?
Yes. A worn plug, damaged boot, wiring or connector fault can set coil and misfire codes. Inspect the plug and boot when you pull the coil.
