1984-1985 or 1986-1989

Honda catalogs show a clear break in clutch cable fitment between the 1984-1985 Accord and the 1986-1989 car, so do not assume one cable fits all of these years. The earlier car came as a hatchback and sedan. The later car added a coupe, with trims such as DX, LX, LX-i and SE-i.

Fitment samples here include the 1.8L and 2.0L manual cars, the SEi 1.8L and California emissions cars. Only manual Accords use a clutch cable. Compare the firewall routing, threaded adjuster, pedal end and transmission end with your old cable, and check the VIN on a late 1989 car.

Signs of a worn clutch cable

A cable wears inside its housing, frays or stretches over time. You may notice a pedal that gets harder to push, a clutch that engages at a different point even after adjustment, grinding or trouble selecting gears, or a clutch that will not fully release.

If the cable snaps, the pedal goes slack or drops to the floor and the car cannot be driven. A worn clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, pedal mechanism or release lever can feel similar, so check the cable movement before you buy.

Fitting and adjusting the cable

Most listings are a single complete cable. Check whether adjuster nuts or clips are included, and reuse or replace the old ones as needed.

Route the new cable exactly like the original, away from sharp bends, exhaust heat and the steering and suspension. Bad routing makes the pedal heavy and can stop the clutch from releasing. Inspect the pedal mount, firewall bracket and release lever while the old cable is out. Set the free play to the Honda spec for your year, and confirm the clutch fully disengages before you drive.
