Impala alternator fitment by era

The Impala name covers very different cars. The 1970s through 1996 Impalas were rear-wheel-drive full-size cars, the 1994-1996 Impala SS among them. From 2000 to 2013 it was a front-wheel-drive sedan with V6 engines, and the 2014-2017 car used a 2.5L four-cylinder or 3.6L V6. Alternators do not cross between these eras.

Within a generation, engine and amperage decide the fit. The 2006-2013 cars were cataloged with both 125-amp and 150-amp units, and police, taxi and fleet packages can use higher output. Compare the amperage, connector, pulley, mounting ears and case clocking with your original before you order.

Signs your Impala alternator is failing

Common signs are a battery warning light, dim or flickering lights, accessories that slow down or reset, a battery that keeps going flat and a whine or grinding noise from the alternator bearings. Once it stops charging, the car runs on battery power until it stalls or will not restart.

A failed internal regulator can also overcharge. On 2006-2013 Impalas, code P0563 for high system voltage is linked to alternator and regulator problems. Before you buy, test charging voltage and check the belt, tensioner, battery cables and grounds, because a slipping belt or a poor connection can mimic a bad alternator.

Choosing and fitting the replacement

Match the amperage of your original unit rather than guessing. A high-output alternator such as some Powermaster units is not automatically a direct replacement, so read the listing. Check whether the part is new or remanufactured, and confirm it is a complete alternator and not a pulley or connector.

Disconnect the negative battery cable before you start. Release belt tension, unplug the connector and battery lead, then unbolt the unit. Inspect the serpentine belt, tensioner, battery terminals and ground straps while you are in there. After installation, check charging voltage under load and confirm the warning light and any charging codes have cleared.

Impala questions

What amp alternator does a 2006-2013 Chevy Impala use?

It varies. Catalogs show both 125-amp and 150-amp alternators for this generation, depending on engine and equipment. Read the rating on your original unit and match it to the listing.

Can a bad belt make my Impala look like it has a bad alternator?

Yes. A slipping serpentine belt, a weak tensioner, loose battery cables or bad grounds can all cause low charging. Test the charging system and inspect those parts before you replace the alternator.

Do 1990s Impala SS alternators fit a 2000s Impala?

No. The 1994-1996 Impala SS was a rear-wheel-drive V8 car, while 2000 and later Impalas are front-wheel-drive with different engines and mounts. Choose by year and engine in the fitment table.
