Engine, fuel type and pump type

Impala fuel pumps vary widely across this range. Older full-size rear-wheel-drive cars and the 1994-1996 Impala SS use their own pumps. From 2000, the Impala is front-wheel drive with an in-tank module. 2000-2005 cars mostly run the 3.4L or 3.8L V6, and 2006-2013 cars use the 3.5L, 3.9L or 3.6L V6.

Check gas or flex fuel, since listings split the 3.5L and 3.6L that way, along with VIN codes like N, K or 3. California PZEV cars can use different module wiring. The 3.6L direct injection engine also has an engine-mounted high-pressure pump, which is a different part from the tank module. The Impala Limited is cataloged separately too.

Signs of a failing pump

A worn Impala fuel pump often causes long cranking, a crank with no start, stalling, or sputtering and lost power when you accelerate or merge. Some pumps hold pressure at idle but fade at highway speed. A loud whine or buzz from the tank area is another warning.

A fuel gauge that reads wrong points to the sender on the module. On the 3.6L, a failing high-pressure pump can cause hard starts and fuel pressure codes. Test fuel pressure and check the relay, fuse and wiring before you buy, because those cause the same symptoms.

Module or pump only, and access

A complete module includes the pump, sender, strainer and housing, and some come with a wiring harness. A pump insert like the Walbro unit reuses your old housing and sender, which takes more work but costs less. Compare the connector, hose ports and lock ring with your old part.

Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect the battery. Work outdoors, away from sparks. Depending on year, you reach the module through an access panel or by lowering the tank. Fit a new tank seal every time the module comes out, then cycle the key to prime and check for leaks.

Impala questions

Does my Impala have one fuel pump or two?

Most Impalas have one in-tank pump. Cars with the 3.6L direct injection engine also have an engine-mounted high-pressure pump. Diagnose which one has failed, since they are different parts.

Do flex fuel and gas Impalas use the same fuel pump?

Not always. Listings for the 3.5L and 3.6L Impala are split by flex fuel and gas versions. Check your VIN code and engine, then match both in the fitment table.

Is the Impala Limited fuel pump the same as the 2014-2020 Impala?

No. The 2014-2016 Impala Limited carries over the earlier design and is cataloged apart from the redesigned Impala. Choose the exact model in the fitment table.
