Impala shock fitment by era
The Impala name covers very different cars. 1958-1985 models are full-size rear-wheel-drive cars with separate front and rear shocks, and mounting and length vary by year, body and suspension option. The 1994-1996 Impala SS has its own dedicated front and rear applications.
From 2000 on, the Impala is front-wheel drive. The front uses struts, so most shocks here for these years are rear parts. Some later rear units are side specific, listed as rear left or rear right. Fitment notes name engines such as the 2.4L Eco and 3.6L, and the Impala Limited is a separate model. Check whether a part is a bare shock or an assembly with a mount.
Symptoms of worn Impala shocks
On an Impala, worn shocks show up as a soft, floaty ride that keeps bouncing after dips, more body roll in corners and nose dive under braking. Push down hard on one corner. If it bounces more than once, the damping is weak.
Look for oil on the shock body, which is a clear sign of failure. Clunks, rattles and uneven tire wear can come from shocks, but worn mounts, bushings, springs or sway bar links cause similar noises. Inspect those before you order.
Pairs and installation tips
Replace shocks in pairs on the same axle so both sides damp the same. Many listings are sold each, so order two, or pick a set such as the TRQ rear shock set. If a listing names rear left or rear right, buy one of each.
Rear shocks are the simpler job. Support the car on jack stands, remove the wheel if needed for access, then undo the upper and lower fasteners. On front-wheel-drive models, front strut work is bigger and needs a spring compressor if you reuse the spring. Replace worn bushings and mounts while you are there.

Impala questions
Does a 2014-2020 Impala have front shocks?
No. Front-wheel-drive Impalas use front struts, and the shocks listed for these years are rear parts. Some rear assemblies are side specific, so check whether the listing says rear left or rear right.
Are Impala SS shocks different from a regular Impala?
Yes. The 1994-1996 Impala SS is a rear-wheel-drive car with dedicated shock applications. Choose the SS and your year in the fitment table rather than a general Impala listing.
How many shocks should I buy for my Impala?
Buy at least two for one axle, since shocks are replaced in pairs. If a listing is side specific, order the left and right versions. Classic Impalas with worn shocks at both ends need four.
