Engine and cover design
Across 1964-2020, the Impala used many engines, from classic small-block V8 engines to the 3.4L, 3.8L, 3.9L and 3.6L V6 engines in front-wheel-drive sedans. The engine and valve cover design decide the gasket. Body style and trim do not.
On classic small-block V8 engines, check the cover bolt pattern, since perimeter-bolt and center-bolt covers use different gaskets. On V6 and V8 engines, the two banks can use different shapes, so see whether a listing covers one side or both. Some listings note VIN codes, flex fuel or the supercharged 3.8L. Later 3.6L engines may be listed as camshaft cover gasket kits.
Oil leak warning signs
The gasket hardens and shrinks with heat and age, and oil starts to seep out. You may see oil wet around the edge of the cover or running down the side of the engine. A burning oil smell or light smoke after a drive means oil is dripping onto hot exhaust parts. The oil level may drop between changes.
On some engines, oil can leak into the spark plug wells and cause misfires. Before you buy, clean the area and trace the leak. Intake manifold gaskets, timing cover seals and oil sender leaks can look similar.
Doing the job right
A full set is usually the better buy, since it often includes bolt grommets and spark plug tube seals. Replace those rubber parts rather than reusing hardened ones. Felpro and APEX sets here cover both banks on many engines.
You may need to remove the engine cover, ignition coils, wiring and intake ducting to reach the valve covers. Clean both sealing surfaces fully and check the cover for warping or cracks. Use RTV only at the corners or joints your engine calls for. Tighten the bolts in sequence to the torque spec, then run the engine and check for leaks.

Impala questions
Do Impala valve cover gaskets come as a set?
Many do. Gasket sets often include both banks plus grommets and tube seals, while single gaskets cover one cover only. Read the listing to see exactly what is included.
Why does my Impala smell like burning oil?
A leaking valve cover gasket can drip oil onto the hot exhaust, causing a burning smell or light smoke. Look for oil around the cover edges to confirm the source.
Do classic Impala small-block V8 engines all use the same valve cover gasket?
No. Cover bolt patterns differ, such as perimeter-bolt and center-bolt designs. Check your engine and cover style before ordering a gasket, and compare the bolt holes on your old gasket with the listing photo.
