Which Malibu pump you need

The 1983 Malibu is rear-wheel drive, and some V8 cars use a mechanical pump on the engine. From 1997 the Malibu is front-wheel drive with an electric in-tank module. Fitment then varies by engine, such as the 2.2L, 2.4L, 3.1L or 3.5L, and by gas, flex fuel or hybrid.

From 2013, direct injection engines add an engine-mounted high-pressure pump. The 2.5L and the 1.5L turbo use one, alongside the tank module. Know which pump you need before ordering. PZEV emissions cars can need a different module, and one 3.5L listing fits only cars with a Z as the fourth VIN digit.

Fuel pump trouble signs

A Malibu with a failing pump may crank without starting, start only some of the time, stall, hesitate or lose power when you accelerate. A loud whine from the tank is common. You should hear a short hum when you turn the key on. If it is missing, that is a clue, not proof.

On 1.5L turbo cars, a bad high-pressure pump can set a check engine light and pressure codes or cause a no-start. Check fuel pressure, fuses, relays and wiring before buying. Ignition and sensor faults can also cause a no-start.

Complete module and install notes

A complete module brings the pump, sender, strainer and housing, and some, like one 3.1L unit here, add a reservoir, upgraded wiring harness and tank seal. A pump insert like the Carter unit reuses your housing. Compare connector, outlet and lock ring with the original.

Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect the battery. Work in open air with no sparks nearby. Fit a new seal under the lock ring and look for heat damage on the connector, since a burnt plug can kill a new pump. Prime the system by cycling the key, then check for leaks.

Malibu questions

Does the Malibu 1.5L turbo have two fuel pumps?

Yes. It has an in-tank low-pressure module and an engine-mounted high-pressure pump. They are separate parts. Diagnose which one has failed before you order, and confirm your engine in the fitment table.

Does PZEV matter for a Malibu fuel pump?

It can. Some 2008-2012 Malibu modules are listed as excluding PZEV cars. Check the emissions label under the hood and match it in the fitment notes.

Will a flex fuel Malibu use the same fuel pump as a gas model?

Not always. Listings for the 2.4L Malibu separate flex fuel, gas and hybrid versions. Check your VIN code and select the matching engine in the fitment table.
