Explorer compressor fitment by era

This range covers several Explorer platforms. 1996-2001, 2002-2005, 2006-2010 and 2011-2019 models each use different compressor applications. The 2011 move to a unibody platform was a major change.

Engine is the main selector. Listings here are split by the 4.0L V6 VIN E, the 4.6L V8 VIN W, the 3.5L V6 and the 2.0L or 2.3L turbo four. Rear air conditioning can also change the part. Explorer Sport Trac is cataloged apart from the SUV, so do not assume they share a compressor. Trim and 4WD are not reliable guides. Match the ports, connector and mounting holes to your old unit.

Signs of compressor trouble

A bad compressor often means weak or no cold air, a grinding or rattling noise with the AC on, or oily residue around the compressor body. A seized unit can squeal the belt or even throw it.

If the clutch will not engage, do not assume the compressor is dead. Low refrigerant, a pressure switch, a blown fuse, a relay or a failed clutch coil can all cause it. Have the system checked with gauges first so you know the compressor itself has failed.

Kits, oil and AC service

Some compressors come with a clutch and some need your old clutch moved over, so read each listing. The UAC, GPD and DIY Solutions kits bundle extra parts. Ford guidance calls for a new accumulator and orifice tube on 2001 and newer models when you replace the compressor.

Refrigerant must be recovered with proper equipment before you disconnect any line. Cap open fittings to keep out dirt and moisture. Drain and measure the oil from the old unit, then set the new one as its maker directs. Fit new AC rated O-rings, then evacuate and recharge. Access may require removing the belt, intake parts or a fender liner panel.

Explorer questions

Does the Explorer Sport Trac use the same AC compressor as the Explorer?

Do not assume it does. Sport Trac is cataloged separately from the Explorer SUV. Choose Sport Trac only if the listing names it, and match your engine and year in the fitment table.

Do I need a new accumulator with my Explorer AC compressor?

Ford parts guidance calls for replacing the accumulator and orifice tube on 2001 and newer Explorers during compressor replacement. Some compressor kits include these parts, which saves a separate order.

Does my Explorer AC compressor come with a clutch?

It depends on the listing. Some replacements include the clutch, while others need your original clutch transferred. Check the product description before you order, and plan for the extra step if needed.
