Body, year and features

Explorer mirrors change with each body: 1995-2001, 2002-2005, 2006-2010 and the 2011-2018 crossover, which uses very different assemblies. The two-door Explorer Sport and the Sport Trac are separate applications, so only use a listing that names them.

Engine and 4WD do not decide the mirror. Features do. Check for heated glass, a puddle lamp, a turn signal, blind spot glass, memory and auto dimming. Note the cover finish, such as textured black, paint to match or chrome. One listing fits only power mirrors without heat or a puddle lamp, so read the notes. Compare connector shape and pin count with your old mirror.

Why Explorer mirrors get replaced

The most common reason is damage. A clipped mirror in a parking lot or garage can leave a cracked housing, broken glass or a mount that no longer holds. A mirror that flops or will not keep its angle usually needs replacing too.

On power mirrors, the glass may stop moving in one or more directions, the heat may stop clearing fog, or a built-in lamp may quit. Before you buy a full mirror, check the switch, fuse and door wiring, because those can cause the same faults.

Full assembly or glass only

If the housing, motor and wiring are fine and only the glass broke, replacement glass with a backing plate costs less. Buy a full assembly when the housing or motor is damaged. Most mirrors are sold as one side, so pick driver or passenger. CIPA also lists a towing mirror for drivers who pull a trailer.

To fit a complete mirror, remove the inside door trim panel, unplug the connector and remove the retaining nuts. Mount the new mirror and plug it in. Test adjustment, heat and lamps before you refit the panel, and replace any broken clips.

Explorer questions

Does the Explorer Sport Trac use the same mirror as the Explorer?

No, treat them as separate. Sport Trac mirrors go with its pickup-style cab and are cataloged apart from the four-door Explorer. Choose a listing that names Sport Trac if that is your vehicle.

Can I replace just the mirror glass on my Explorer?

Yes, if the housing, motor and wiring still work. Replacement glass comes with a backing plate that snaps on. A full assembly is needed if the housing or motor is damaged.

Will a 2010 Explorer mirror fit a 2011 Explorer?

No. The 2011 Explorer moved to a new body with different mirror assemblies. Select your exact year in the filter and match the features listed.
