Ford Explorer TPMS Sensors
Buy Ford Explorer TPMS sensors online from 14 tire pressure sensors for 2004-2019 SUVs, priced from $31.99 to $95.97. Brands include Dorman, Standard Motor Products, Motorcraft, VDO, API and Action Crash. Your model year and wheel decide which sensor fits, and most Explorers need a relearn after a new sensor goes in.

Year and wheel decide fitment
The Explorer in this range spans two very different SUVs. 2004-2010 models are body-on-frame, and 2011-2019 models are a unibody crossover with a facelift for 2016. Sensor compatibility should be checked by year rather than assumed across the whole range.
Engine, trim, 2WD or 4WD and suspension do not normally change the sensor. Your wheels and valve stem style do. The Explorer Sport Trac has its own wheel and sensor applications, so do not use a standard Explorer listing for it without checking. If you run aftermarket wheels, confirm the sensor suits them, and compare valve style and frequency with your original.
Why Explorer sensors fail
TPMS sensors run on a sealed battery that cannot be swapped, so they are replaced when it runs down. You will see a TPMS warning light, a tire pressure sensor fault message, a blank reading for one tire or a warning that keeps coming back after you set the pressure.
Sensors also fail from corrosion at the valve stem or damage during tire service. Before you buy, check all four tires with a gauge. A tire that is really low will trigger the same light as a dead sensor.
Install and relearn
The tire has to come off the bead, so this job is best done with a tire machine. Prying near the sensor can break it. Fit new valve hardware such as the core, nut, grommet and cap when supplied, then inflate, leak test and balance.
Next, the Explorer must learn the new sensor ID. Some models relearn while driving, while others need a TPMS activation tool. A common manual method triggers each sensor in order, left front, right front, right rear and left rear, with a horn chirp confirming each one. Follow the steps for your year.

Explorer questions
Does my Ford Explorer need a TPMS relearn after a new sensor?
Yes, in most cases. The new sensor ID has to be introduced to the TPMS module. Some Explorers learn while driving, while others need a TPMS activation tool and a set wheel order.
Should I replace all four TPMS sensors on my Explorer?
Replace one if only one has failed. If all four are original and the same age, their batteries are likely near the end too, so a full set can save repeat tire work.
Is the Explorer Sport Trac TPMS sensor the same as the Explorer?
Do not assume so. The Sport Trac has its own wheel and sensor applications. Use a listing that names Sport Trac or confirm the fitment table for your exact model.
