Corvette timing chain by engine
On a Corvette the engine code decides the timing chain, not the trim or body. Saying 5.7L is not enough, because the L98, LT1, LT4, LS1 and LS6 all use different timing parts. The C3 cars from 1972-1982 vary by small or big block and by camshaft and sprocket setup. The 1984-1991 L98 differs from the 1992-1996 LT1 and LT4.
The 1997-2004 C5, the 2005-2013 C6 and the 2014-2019 C7 each run their own engines, and the 2020-2022 C8 uses the LT2, with the 2022 Z06 LT6 a separate application. Listings here note VIN codes such as the 5.7L P, S and 8 and the 6.0L U. Check your VIN and engine RPO before ordering.
Signs of a worn timing chain
As a chain stretches and the guides and tensioner wear, you may hear a rattle or clatter from the front cover, often worst at startup or idle. Other signs are rough idle, misfire, lost power and hard starting. If the timing jumps, the engine may not start at all. On newer engines, a cam and crank correlation code can point to a timing problem.
These signs are not unique to the chain. Check the tensioner, guides, sprockets, ignition and cam and crank sensors first. On C3 and C4 cars, a worn harmonic balancer or wrong ignition timing can also cause noise or poor running. Timing chains have no set replacement interval.
Chain only or full timing set
A single chain is cheaper, but sprockets and guides wear along with it. A complete set, like the Cloyes, Melling and Competition Cams sets here, includes the sprockets and sometimes guides, a tensioner and bolts. Contents vary, so read each listing. Match sprocket tooth counts and the chain type to your engine, and only use a multi-keyway performance set if your cam and cover suit it.
Replace the timing cover gasket and front crank seal during the job. On 1992-1996 LT1 and LT4 engines, the water pump and OptiSpark have to come off, so inspect them while you are in there. Line up the cam and crank timing marks exactly, and follow the torque and sealant specs for your engine.

Corvette questions
Do all 5.7L Corvette engines use the same timing chain?
No. The L98, LT1, LT4, LS1 and LS6 are all 5.7L engines with different timing parts. Check your engine RPO or VIN code against the fitment table.
When should I replace my Corvette timing chain?
There is no fixed interval. Replace it when diagnosis shows stretch, worn guides or a failing tensioner, or during an engine repair that exposes it. Rattle at startup is a common warning sign.
What should I replace with a Corvette timing chain?
Replace the timing cover gasket and front crank seal. Inspect the sprockets, guides and tensioner, and on LT1 and LT4 engines check the water pump and OptiSpark, since they come off for access.
