Equinox alternator by generation
The Equinox has three generations in this range. 2005-2009 models mostly run the 3.4L V6, with a 3.6L in some later versions. 2010-2017 models use the 2.4L four or a V6, and GM lists a 120 amp unit for many of those. The 2018 Equinox is a new design with the 1.5L turbo and 2.0L engines, so keep it separate.
Match the engine and VIN code first, such as the 3.4L LNJ, 2.4L LEA or 1.5L LYX. Then compare the amp rating on your old alternator. A 2005 3.4L unit is rated higher than the 2010-2017 one, so they are not swaps. Check the connector, pulley and mounting ears too.
Equinox charging symptoms
A failing alternator in an Equinox can light the battery warning, make lights dim or flicker, slow the power windows and leave you with repeated dead batteries. Hard starts, stalling and a no-start can follow once the battery runs down.
Worn brushes, bearings, diodes or the internal regulator are the usual causes. A tired battery, a loose ground, a damaged cable or a worn belt can cause the same warnings. Test charging voltage and the battery before you replace anything.
Fitting the replacement

With the old unit out, look over the belt for cracks or glazing and check that the tensioner holds firm. Clean the battery terminals and grounds. Once the new alternator is in, confirm the belt routing, start the engine and check that it charges with the lights and blower on.
