Impala EGR fitment by engine
The years here span very different Impalas. The 1982-1985 cars were full-size rear-wheel-drive sedans, coupes and wagons with V8 engines. The 1994-1996 Impala SS was a separate full-size application. The 2000-2005 Impala is a front-wheel-drive sedan with either a 3.4L or a 3.8L V6, and those two engines take different EGR valves.
Engine and emissions setup decide the part, not trim. Listings here name engine codes such as the 3.8L L36 and the 3.4L with VIN code E. On 2000-2005 cars the valve is electric with a five-pin connector. Match the connector, mounting pattern and original part number on your valve before you order.
Signs of a bad Impala EGR valve
Carbon is the usual enemy. It can hold the valve open or block flow, and electrical or position sensor faults can make it act up too. Typical symptoms are a check engine light, a rough or unstable idle, stalling when you come to a stop, hesitation, reduced power or fuel economy, and pinging under load.
Common codes are P0401 for low flow, P0402 for excess flow, P0404 for range or performance and P0405 for a low sensor circuit. On the 2000-2005 3.8L, P0402 with a warm rough idle or stalling often points to a valve stuck open with carbon. Still, check the passages and wiring before you condemn the valve.
Installing an Impala EGR valve
On 2000-2005 cars the valve sits on top of the engine near the throttle body and is held by two fasteners, usually with a 13 mm socket. Let the engine cool first, and use penetrating oil if the bolts are rusty.
Always fit a new gasket rather than reusing the old one. Some valves include it and some do not, so check the listing. With the valve off, clean the mounting surface and clear carbon from the EGR passage, because a clogged passage will bring the code right back. Inspect the connector and wiring too, and on older vacuum-operated systems check the vacuum hose.

Impala questions
Does a 3.4L and 3.8L Impala use the same EGR valve?
No. On 2000-2005 Impalas the 3.4L and 3.8L V6 engines use different EGR valves. Select your engine in the fitment table and compare the connector and mounting with your original valve.
What causes code P0402 on a 2000-2005 Impala 3.8L?
P0402 means excess EGR flow. On the 3.8L, a valve stuck open with carbon is a common cause, often with a warm rough idle or stalling. Confirm the valve and passage condition before replacing it.
Does an Impala EGR valve come with a gasket?
Some listings include the gasket and others sell it separately. Either way, use a new gasket and clean the mounting surface when you install the valve.
