Ram 2500 coil fitment by engine
Coils only apply to gas engines. The 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins diesels have no spark ignition, so they do not use these parts. On 1994-2002 trucks, the 5.2L and 5.9L V8 and the 8.0L V10 use a single coil that works with the distributor and plug wires, and cab, bed and drive type do not change it.
The 2003 and later trucks are different. The 5.7L Hemi uses individual coils, normally one per cylinder, and the 4.7L V8 has its own coil. One listing here fits 5.7L Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks only. Check your engine first, then compare the connector, terminals, mounting and boot length with your old coil.
Signs of a failing Ram coil
A weak coil shows up as a misfire, rough idle, hesitation, low power, hard starting, stalling or worse fuel economy, usually with the check engine light on. Heat, age, moisture, oil, a cracked boot and corroded terminals are common reasons coils fail.
A misfire code for one cylinder does not prove the coil is bad. On Hemi trucks, swap the suspect coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire follows it. On older distributor trucks, check the cap, rotor, plug wires and plugs before you replace the coil, because worn parts there cause the same symptoms.
Single coil, set or kit
Older distributor engines use one coil, so you need one. On the Hemi, replace only the failed coil unless testing shows others are weak too. Sets and kits, such as the DriveBolt and MSD kits listed here, cover several cylinders at once.
Disconnect the negative battery cable before you start. Release the connector lock before you pull the coil, and tighten the mounting bolts to the factory spec. Look at the spark plugs while you are there, and replace any that are worn or oil-soaked. Clear the codes afterward and road test the truck to confirm the misfire is gone.

Ram 2500 questions
Does a Cummins diesel Ram 2500 have ignition coils?
No. The 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins diesels use compression ignition and have no spark ignition coils. The coils on this page are for gas engines only.
How many ignition coils does a 5.7L Hemi Ram 2500 have?
The 5.7L Hemi uses individual coils, normally one per cylinder. Replace only the failed coil unless testing shows others are weak, or choose a set from the fitment table.
Do 1994-2002 Ram 2500 gas trucks use one ignition coil?
Yes. The 5.2L, 5.9L and 8.0L engines in these years use a single coil that works with the distributor and plug wires. Match your engine in the fitment table.
