Transmission and relay match
The 1996-2002 Ram 2500 came in regular cab and extended or Quad Cab form, in 2WD and 4WD. None of that decides relay fitment. What matters is the transmission and control system. Trucks with a manual transmission do not use an automatic overdrive relay, and gas and diesel trucks used different automatics.
Because the same relay part is often listed under several circuit names, read the fitment table on each product and compare the terminal count, keying and shape with the relay you pull out. A VIN-based lookup is the most reliable way to confirm a match.
Signs of a bad overdrive relay
Relay contacts can burn, corrode or stick with age and heat. When that happens you may get no overdrive, overdrive that works some of the time, slow or erratic engagement, or a transmission that stays in a lower gear at highway speed.
The same symptoms can come from a fuse, wiring, the overdrive solenoid, a speed sensor, the valve body or the engine computer. A relay is cheap to swap, but if the problem stays after the new relay goes in, keep diagnosing.
Swapping the relay
Turn off the ignition, and disconnect the battery if your service procedure calls for it. Check the fuse first, then pull the old relay and look at the socket. Heat marks, loose or pushed-back terminals and green corrosion mean the socket or wiring needs repair, and a new relay will not fix that.
Push the new relay in fully and test overdrive on a drive. No other part needs to be replaced with the relay unless testing finds a bad fuse, socket, wire, solenoid or sensor.

Ram 2500 questions
Why is my Ram 2500 overdrive relay sold as an A/C or ASD relay?
Relays of the same design are often used in several circuits, so listings name them differently. Check the fitment table to confirm the relay is cataloged for your truck, and match its pins and shape to the original.
Does a manual transmission Ram 2500 have an overdrive relay?
No. The overdrive relay is part of the automatic transmission control. Trucks with a manual transmission do not use one, so confirm your transmission before ordering.
My Ram 2500 still has no overdrive after a new relay. What next?
Check the fuse, the relay socket and the wiring, then the overdrive solenoid, speed sensor and transmission controls. The relay is only one part of the circuit.
