Engine comes first for fitment

The 2001-2002 trucks are on the older second-generation body, and 2003-2009 trucks are the third generation, with regular cab, Quad Cab and later Mega Cab versions in 2WD and 4WD. Cab and drivetrain matter less than the engine.

Compressors are listed separately for the 5.9L gas, 8.0L V10, 5.9L Cummins and 6.7L Cummins, and one for one engine should not be assumed to fit another. Some listings name the compressor type, such as a 10S20E with a 7 groove pulley. Applications also change within the 2001-2009 span, so compare the mounting, pulley and clutch, electrical connector and line port direction with the unit on your truck.

Symptoms of a failing compressor

The usual signs are no cold air, a clutch that will not engage, grinding or rattling from the compressor, belt squeal, refrigerant oil on the body of the compressor, or a seized unit that drags the belt.

Those symptoms are not proof by themselves. A clutch that does not engage can come from a power or ground fault or from low system pressure. Test clutch power and ground and check pressures before you buy. If the compressor did fail inside, metal debris may have spread into the condenser, lines, drier and orifice tube.

Compressor alone or a full kit

You can buy a compressor by itself, or a kit from UAC, GPD or DIY Solutions that adds parts such as the drier or accumulator, orifice tube and seals. Kit contents vary, so read each listing.

Recover the refrigerant with proper equipment before you open the system. After an internal failure, replace the drier or accumulator and the orifice tube, flush the reusable parts and add the correct oil charge, or debris can kill the new compressor. Then evacuate, leak-test and recharge by the specified weight. Oil type, refrigerant amount and belt routing vary by engine and year.

Ram 2500 questions

Does a 5.9 Cummins AC compressor fit a 6.7 Cummins Ram 2500?

Do not assume it does. Compressors for the 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins are listed as separate applications. Check the engine listed for each compressor and compare the mount, pulley and ports with your old unit.

What else should I replace with a Ram 2500 AC compressor?

If the old compressor failed internally, replace the drier or accumulator and the orifice tube, and flush the reusable lines and condenser. A kit can bundle these parts, but contents vary by listing.

Why won't my Ram 2500 AC clutch engage?

It can be a failed clutch or compressor, but a missing power or ground signal, or low refrigerant pressure, will also stop it. Test the clutch circuit and system pressure before you replace the compressor.
